Friday 26th February - walk ***** - Martlesham Church to Woodbridge Tide Mill – sunny and mild.

What a lovely day here in Suffolk, definitely spring is in the air, wall to wall sunshine to start and I even managed to do my exercises outside in the back garden for the first time this year, also the first outing for my shorts too:) So after our morning at home and with a picnic packed Mag and I drove the nine miles over to Martlesham Church to check out the crocuses arriving just after mid-day with a few fluffy clouds appearing. This is a popular little car park and was full mainly elderly people walking the short distance to see the flowers. When we walked the short distance into the graveyard, we were not disappointed and the scene before us took our breath away, it was absolutely stunning:) We have never seen so many purple crocuses plus a few snowdrops set amongst the grave stones with the old church in the background with super views down to Martlesham creek. After taking in the flowers, we walked along the footpath leading down to the creek quickly seeing a Blue tit, the first of loads of birds seen:) Then down the steps leading to the end of the creek with the tide very high but going out now. This is one of the nicest walks in Suffolk along the creek to Kyson Point on the River Deben with fantastic views up to the impressive Woodbridge Tide Mill. The boat shed at Kyson Point is our go to lunch spot here but there was a family already there, lucky for us they were just about to paddle off in their canoe. We had a good game of guess the kids ages before they left and then we settled down for our yummy chicken sandwich in lovely peace and quiet enjoying the wildlife. There were two Little Grebes fishing in front of us, three noisy geese headed down river, loads of gulls with a steady stream of waders flying up the creek as the mud appears as the tide dropped! Well rested we then continued ap the good Deben path all the way to the mill, a very popular walk, again loads of birds, close up curlews, Godwits, knots, egrets, swans, turn stones with some circling buzzards too! On reaching the sailing club it became even busier and we were not overly happy in the crowds, a lot of breath holding as we passed the many large houseboats finally taking a seat by the mill for five minutes. Then it was just a case of retracing our steps back to the end of the creek, we made a little detour through the boat yard but the paths were very muddy this way! Back at the van we made a small donation to parking for the church before heading home for our usual cuppa and cake, we had covered over 5.50 miles being out for 3.50 hours enjoying the best that Suffolk has to offer. Tomorrows weather is looking the same, perhaps we can get away from people on our bikes!
